Downeast Credit Union and Insurance recently donated $3,960 to area food pantries including: Belfast Soup Kitchen, Irene Chadbourne Ecumenical Food Pantry, OHI Brewer Area Food Pantry and Richmond Food Pantry. Each year, Downeast raises money and collects non-perishable food items to help food pantries in all 8 communities they serve and this year was able to donate $989.94 to each organization.
This is part of a statewide effort that Downeast and other credit unions participate in called Ending Hunger in Maine. Recently, the Campaign announced that it raised $1,303,706 in food and monetary donations in 2024. This achievement marks a new fundraising milestone for the Campaign which has been working to fight hunger in Maine for 35 years.
“We would like to thank our team and members who donated to this cause, allowing us to make contributions to our local Food Pantries,” stated Marketing Director, Kristie Libby. “The fundraising efforts that our Team Members coordinate really do make a difference.”
Funds raised through the Ending Hunger in Maine Campaign remain in the state and directly support local organizations such as food banks, pantries, healthcare programs, schools, colleges, and meal sites. In 2024, the Campaign provided financial relief to 274 different organizations.
“Hunger touches every corner of our state, impacting individuals both young and old,” shared Elise Baldacci, President of the Maine Credit Union League. “As an industry driven by a shared mission of People Helping People, credit unions are deeply committed to solving this problem—offering their time, talent, and resources to address our state’s meal gap. Their unwavering support to end hunger in Maine is clearly demonstrated by these remarkable fundraising results.”
Since the Campaign’s inception in 1990, Maine credit unions have contributed over $14.9 million to help feed our neighbors in need.
