We are searching for an Subprime Auto Lending Underwriter. The chosen candidate will work in one of our 9 locations or work remotely. This candidate must reside in the State of Maine.

Summary

The Subprime Auto Lending Underwriter is responsible for underwriting, credit risk management, and portfolio growth.

Underwriter will evaluate, structure, and approve consumer auto loan applications for borrowers with sub-prime credit profiles across both the direct and indirect auto lending channels. This role balances member service, responsible lending practices, and portfolio growth by identifying lending opportunities that fall outside traditional credit standards while maintaining sound risk management.

Key Responsibilities

  • Evaluate and underwrite loan applications submitted through dealership/Indirect lending partner and our direct channels.
  • Review credit reports, income documentation, debt-to-income ratios, payment history, and collateral value.
  • Structure loan terms including loan amount, term, rate, appropriate collateral and stipulations based on risk profile.
  • Apply sound credit judgment to balance member service with responsible risk management.
  • Clearly document underwriting decisions and rationale within the loan system.
  • Perform Applicant Interviews when necessary, based on risk profile
  • Assist lending staff in structuring loan options for members who may not qualify under traditional lending guidelines.
  • Provide guidance to lending staff when evaluating complex or sub-prime credit situations.
  • Support lending staff in identifying solutions that help members improve their financial position.
  • Apply appropriate stipulations to ensure loan quality and proper documentation.
  • Maintain strong working relationships with indirect lending partners to support loan growth.
  • Ensure underwriting decisions comply with internal policies, regulatory requirements, and fair lending guidelines.
  • Maintain consistency in underwriting decisions across both lending channels.
  • Monitor loan performance trends within the sub-prime portfolio.
  • Escalate high-risk or exception requests when appropriate.

 

Experience

  • 5 + years of consumer lending, underwriting, or credit analysis experience preferred.
  • 2-4 specifically in subprime lending
  • Experience with indirect auto lending and dealer relationships is a requirement.

 

Skills & Competencies

  • Strong credit analysis and underwriting skills.
  • Knowledge of consumer lending regulations and compliance standards.
  • Ability to interpret credit reports, income documentation, and collateral valuations.
  • Strong decision-making and problem-solving abilities.
  • Excellent communication and relationship management skills.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced lending environment while managing multiple loan decisions.
  • Strong fraud detection and prevention skills, including the ability to identify red flags, inconsistencies, and potential misrepresentation in credit applications.

Summary

The Consumer Loan Underwriter is responsible for underwriting, credit risk management, and portfolio growth.

The Consumer Loan Underwriter is responsible for evaluating, analyzing, and making sound credit decisions on consumer loan applications while balancing prudent risk management with exceptional member service. This position reviews loan requests in accordance with credit union lending policies, regulatory requirements, and established underwriting guidelines. Working closely with the Director of Lending Sales, branch staff, and lending team members, the Consumer Loan Underwriter supports loan growth by making timely, consistent, and informed lending decisions that align with the credit union’s mission and risk appetite.

Key Responsibilities

  • Review and underwrite consumer loan applications, including direct auto loans, personal loans, recreational vehicle loans, unsecured loans, credit cards, and other consumer lending products.
  • Analyze credit reports, income documentation, debt-to-income ratios, collateral values, and other financial information to determine creditworthiness.
  • Approve, deny, or condition loan requests within established lending authority and recommend exceptions or higher-level approvals when appropriate.
  • Ensure lending decisions comply with internal policies, underwriting guidelines, federal and state regulations, and applicable compliance requirements.
  • Communicate loan decisions, stipulations, and recommendations clearly and professionally to lending staff and other stakeholders.
  • Partner with lending and sales teams to identify opportunities to structure loans that meet members’ financial needs while maintaining acceptable risk standards.
  • Provide guidance and support to branch employees and lending staff regarding lending policies, underwriting decisions, and loan structuring.
  • Review exceptions, document rationale for lending decisions, and maintain accurate underwriting records.
  • Monitor trends in consumer lending, credit quality, and portfolio performance to identify opportunities for process improvement.
  • Maintain current knowledge of lending regulations, credit practices, and industry trends.
  • Assist with special projects, quality assurance reviews, and process improvement initiatives as assigned.
  • Deliver exceptional internal and external member service while supporting the credit union’s mission and values.

 

Education & Experience

Position Purpose

Provide information and member service concerning the credit union and its products and services to credit union members, ensuring the highest quality of member service.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Greet and welcome members and visitors to the credit union in a professional manner. Provide prompt, efficient, and accurate service in the processing of transactions.
  • Identify members’ needs, clarify information, research every issue, and provide solutions and | or alternatives.
  • Listen and understand the members needs and seize opportunities to cross-sell products | services.
  • Continuously check member service voice mail, email, secure and electronic channels and reply to these requests in a timely manner.
  • Responds to member online registration requests.
  • Open | close accounts, verify accounts, process stop payments on share draft accounts, order cards, and answer questions regarding share accounts, share drafts, VISA cards, IRAs, certificates, etc.
  • Assist members with basic questions regarding their loans.
  • Assist members with digital services.
  • Collect the information for incoming and outgoing wire requests.
  • Mail, email, or send the loan application or online links to members or prospective members.
  • Responsible for researching member inquires to ensure proper follow up and satisfaction.
  • May be required to fill in for member service representatives, when needed.
  • Ensure that all Credit Union member and team member related business is kept in the strictest confidence.
