Become a Downeast Volunteer!
Downeast Credit Union is a member-owned financial cooperative created in 1941 for the purpose of providing additional value and financial options to its membership. We partner with our members and tailor our products and services to meet their specific individual needs. Our credit union is much different than a bank, with our sole purpose to continually improve the financial well-being of all members collectively – not just a few stockholders. Our credit union promotes a “People helping People” philosophy and culture; a culture where we serve people, not profit.
Commitment to our members is not the only thing growing at Downeast Credit Union, as we are making a commitment to all of our Team Members as well. The credit union has been recognized as a Best Place to Work in Maine in 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021 & 2022.

Volunteers who come together for the sole purpose of representing the best interests of DECU’s members are the cornerstones of what makes credit unions unique. Our volunteers enrich the lives of all the members they represent, and enhance their own leadership, management, and financial skills.
Board Members: Board members are elected to three-year terms of office by DECU’s membership at the annual meeting. They set future strategy, develop policies, oversee DECU’s financial security, review the CEO’s progress in achieving goals and objectives, represent the interests of the entire membership, and report to the members at the annual meeting. In addition to attending monthly board meetings, directors have opportunities to serve on committees and task forces and to receive free training and education on issues important to the credit union and its members.
Associate Board Members (Volunteer Development Program): Associate Board members are appointed by the DECU Board of Directors on an annual basis. They attend the monthly board meetings and participate in all discussions, but do not have voting authority. They have access to free training and education to help them fulfill their role.
