For the third year in a row, Downeast Credit Union has been recognized as one of Maine’s Best Places to Work for 2019 at an Awards Ceremony on October 3rd in Augusta.

The Best Places to Work program has been recognizing elite Maine businesses since 2006. The goal of Best Places to Work in Maine is to raise the bar among employers, encouraging workplace engagement that will attract talented people for years to come.

At the ceremony, president of Best Companies Group, Peter Burke, remarked that the Maine BPTW ceremony is one of the largest events across the country, showing Maine’s dedication to our skilled workforce. Additionally, survey results confirm that BPTW in Maine employers have a 92% engagement rate with the employees, indicating that Maine employers are providing positive work experiences for their teams.

This year, DECU ranked 19th in the mid-sized employer category which includes businesses with 50-249 employees. Overall, 100 businesses were recognized at the 2019 Awards Celebration in Augusta.

“We are proud to be recognized for a third year in a row participating in the Best Places to Work in Maine program,” states DECU President/CEO, Joe Moses. “Our corporate culture and core values center around taking care of our team (how we refer to our employees) as well as our membership. Providing education, prioritizing family and health, supporting community causes, and truly respecting our team leads to loyalty, trust and enhanced opportunities for both them as well as our membership.”

Some workforce highlights DECU is proud to offer include 3-day weekends each month, training and development programs, healthy food options in the break rooms, health club reimbursements, extended breaks for exercise, fully paid health insurance for individual team members, as well as many fun celebrations throughout the year like dress down days and ice cream socials.

“Hiring and retaining skilled talent is a top priority for Downeast as it helps provide exceptional service to our members,” adds Moses. “Nationally, retention levels of employees staying on board at their employer in the banking industry have been around 84%. At Downeast, we experienced 90% retention in 2018 and are pleased to be on par to have 94% retention in 2019.”
