Downeast Credit Union Receives 2026 Roscoe “Rocky” Johnson Award

Downeast Credit Union is honored to receive the 2026 Roscoe “Rocky” Johnson Award from the St. Croix Valley Chamber of Commerce at this year’s Annual Meeting.

The Rocky Johnson Award honors an area business or business leader who demonstrates solid leadership, integrity, professionalism and vision. The award is named in honor of Roscoe “Rocky” Johnson, a well-known local businessman who opened his first hardware store more than 70 years ago and became a respected member of the St. Croix Valley business community.

This year, the Chamber recognized Downeast Credit Union for its longstanding commitment to its members, employees and the communities it serves.

In presenting the award, Chamber President Dee Dee Travis highlighted Downeast Credit Union’s roots in the St. Croix Valley and the values that continue to guide the organization today.

“The organization was born right here in the St. Croix Valley, created with Down East values that recognize integrity, honor hard work and grit, plus understands the importance of supporting its local community.”

Travis also recognized Downeast Credit Union’s growth and continued community involvement, noting that those Down East values have expanded across eight locations in Maine, serving more than 22,000 members.

“The Chamber is not the first to recognize DECU for its accomplishments and efforts in the communities served,” Travis shared, recognizing the credit union’s previous recognition as the Best Credit Union in the Mid-Coast region as well as its years of recognition as a Best Place to Work.

She also highlighted the organization’s commitment to providing exceptional financial opportunities, trusted service and community support throughout Maine. Beyond sponsorships and financial contributions, Downeast Credit Union encourages its team members to participate in their communities, support local events and work alongside area residents and organizations.

“The impact DECU has within the communities it serves is tremendous,” Travis said.

For Downeast Credit Union, receiving the Rocky Johnson Award is especially meaningful because of the organization’s deep roots in the St. Croix Valley. What began as a local credit union 85 years ago has grown while maintaining a strong commitment to the people and communities that have supported it for generations.

“We are humbled and honored to receive this recognition,” said Tonia Lanier, VP of Downeast Credit Union. “Our success is a reflection of our members, our team and the communities we are privileged to serve. We are grateful to be part of the St. Croix Valley and proud to carry these down east values with us as we continue to grow.”
