Important Message for Credit Union Members

Important Info to Members Regarding the Equifax Data Breach

On September 7, 2017, Equifax, one of the three major credit reporting agencies, announced a cybersecurity incident that may potentially impact 143 million U.S. consumers.

According to Equifax, personal information accessed in the breach which occurred from mid-May through July includes names, Social Security numbers, birth dates, addresses and, in some instances, driver's license numbers. In addition, credit card numbers for approximately 209,000 U.S. consumers, and certain dispute documents with personal identifying information for approximately 182,000 U.S. consumers, were accessed.

DECU is advising our members to take the following steps to protect your identity:

  1.  Determine if your information may have been included in the breach here:
  2.  Consider enrolling in DECU's SECURE Checking account which includes IDProtect® personal identity theft protection services. You'll then have access to free credit reports, identity and credit monitoring, and fully managed identity theft resolution services. The cost is $6.95 per month (membership eligibility required) and includes other benefits like interest earned on balances, shopping rewards and more.   3.  Review your credit reports at least annually and account statements monthly. Promptly report any unauthorized activity to your financial institutions. DECU E-Statements allow you to receive your account activity sooner, so be sure to enroll with an MSR today.
  4.  Visit for additional steps to protect your identity.

Whether or not you were affected by this breach, DECU suggests you continue to use caution when callers request personal information over the phone. When uncertain, hang up and dial the company back using a trusted phone number. Update your online account passwords regularly, and always shred any documents containing personal information.
